Key Scripture: “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’” - Matthew 16:24 (NKJV)
Introduction:
To live a surrendered life means giving Jesus control over every part of your heart and daily life. It’s choosing to let Him lead, even when it’s hard.
Jesus taught us about this through His own example and told us to follow Him by taking up our cross. So, how do we do this? Here are some steps you can start today.
1. Seek Jesus First in All Things
Verse: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” - Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
Explanation: Putting Jesus first means He is the most important part of your day. Think of it like starting a conversation with Him as soon as you wake up. When you choose to ask Him what He wants for you before you make decisions, you’re putting Him first.
Action Step: Each morning, take a few minutes to pray and ask Jesus to lead your day. You can say, “Jesus, help me to live for You today and to follow Your ways.”
2. Let Go of What You Want, and Ask God What He Wants
Verse: “Not my will, but Yours, be done.” - Luke 22:42 (NKJV)
Explanation: Jesus gave us the perfect example of surrender when He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. Even though He was facing something painful, He prayed for God’s will above His own. Sometimes what we want isn’t what God wants for us, but we can trust that He knows best.
Action Step: Whenever you face a decision, especially a tough one, take a moment to pray, “Lord, show me what You want me to do, and give me the strength to obey You.”
3. Practice Daily “Dying to Self”
Verse: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” - Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)
Explanation: Dying to self means we let go of selfish desires, like putting ourselves before others or seeking attention. Instead, we choose to live in a way that shows love to Jesus and others.
Action Step: Today, find one thing you can let go of for Jesus. It might be spending less time on social media, forgiving someone who upset you, or choosing kindness over anger. Think of it as a small act of sacrifice.
4. Obey God’s Word
Verse: “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” - James 1:22 (NKJV)
Explanation: If we truly love Jesus, we’ll follow what the Bible teaches. Obedience isn’t always easy, but each time we listen to God’s Word, we grow closer to Him. Obedience shows Jesus that we trust Him, even when we don’t understand.
Action Step: Pick one verse to memorize this week and try to live it out. For example, if you memorize “Be kind to one another” (Ephesians 4:32), look for ways to be kind every day, even if it’s hard.
5. Talk to Jesus Throughout Your Day
Verse: “Pray without ceasing.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV)
Explanation: Living a life of surrender means having an ongoing relationship with Jesus. Just like you talk with your friends, talk to Jesus all day. When you’re feeling happy, sad, confused, or worried, share it with Him.
Action Step: Practice talking to Jesus as you go about your day. You might say, “Thank You, Jesus, for this meal,” or “Help me understand this lesson, Jesus.” This helps you stay close to Him.
6. Trust God, Even When It’s Hard
Verse: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” - Proverbs 3:5 (NKJV)
Explanation: Surrendering means trusting that God’s plan is good, even when we don’t see it. When things don’t go the way we hope, or we’re going through a tough time, we can choose to trust that God is working for our good.
Action Step: Whenever you feel worried or upset, pray and tell Jesus, “I trust You, even if I don’t understand why this is happening.” Try to let go of worrying and let God handle it.
Living a surrendered life to Jesus doesn’t happen in one day; it’s something we practice every day. Remember that Jesus is patient and loving. He understands our struggles and is always there to help us live fully for Him. Each time you choose to seek Him, to trust Him, to obey Him, and to give Him control, you are surrendering and growing closer to Him.
Prayer to End:
“Jesus, I want to live a life of surrender to You. Please help me to put You first, to trust You, and to follow Your ways. Teach me to let go of what I want and to seek Your will for my life. Thank You for loving me and for showing me how to follow You. Amen.”
