Lecrae took home the hardware at the 2026 BET Awards, securing the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award category. The win was for “Headphones,” featuring verses from Atlanta legends Killer Mike and T.I. off the Reconstruction album.
“Headphones” beat out legendary gospel artists like BeBe Winans, CeCe Winans, Kirk Franklin, and Tasha Cobbs Leonard. That’s a massive company. It’s an incredible honor for Lecrae, Mike, and Tip to win out, but should they have been her ein the first place?
No shade at all, but we have to talk about the reality of how we categorize music.
While it is incredible to be included in these spaces and among these music legends, the music doesn’t deserve to be grouped together. Is it fair to say another music category needs to be created to differentiate between gospel, hip-hop, and inspirational? Right now, “Inspirational” is treated like a catch-all for anything “spiritual sounding” anyway.
Maybe Tasha Cobbs Leonard had the top gospel song, and maybe Lecrae had the top hip-hop song. Putting them against each other doesn’t seem right.
Christian hip-hop has made a huge impact in mainstream culture over the last decade. Another category would open up the opportunity for more artists to be nominated and win in two categories. When more people are nominated and more people win, that’s more eyeballs on the BET Awards. Which is exactly what they want, right?
We love seeing CHH get its flowers on the main stage. But it’s time to move past the gospel catch-all bucket. Give the genre its own place.
What do you think? Does CHH deserve its own category? Let us know in the comments.
