Day 19 | Understanding Your Identity in Christ

Most of us build our sense of self out of external validation; we are the role we play at work, the opinions other people hold about us, the number we weigh on a scale, the size of our social media following, the wins we can point to, and the failures we are still apologising for. The trouble with an identity stitched together from those things is that all of them can be taken from us, and when they go, we are left wondering who we even are underneath it all.

Yesterday, we talked about laying down comparison. Today, we go one layer deeper, to the question of what is actually true about us after breaking free from self-doubt.

In 1 Peter 2:9, Scripture answers the question with a confidence that should steady all of us. “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession”.

Chosen. Royal. Holy.

We did not earn these titles by performing well, which means we cannot lose them by performing badly. They describe who we are by virtue of whose we are; this foundation does not falter when our circumstances do. This is the great relief of the Gospel that we keep forgetting: that our identity is an inheritance we have already been given.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are” (1 John 3:1). A child does not have to audition for their place in the family. They belong by birth, and they are loved before they have done anything to deserve it. The same is true of us. God’s love for us is the settled posture of a Father toward a child He chose on purpose. Let us not treat it as a wage He pays for good behaviour.

So much of our striving comes from a fear that we have to keep proving our worth or risk losing it. But we cannot prove our way into something we already possess. The self-doubt that whispers we are not good enough is answered by remembering who God already says we are.

We are chosen. We are loved. We are children of God, and that was settled long before today and will hold long after it. Build your life on that foundation, and watch how much of the striving falls away.

Reflection Questions

1.     What have I been building my identity on that could be taken from me, and how would it feel to let it go?

2.     If I truly believed I was already chosen and loved by God, what would I stop trying to prove today?

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You that my identity is not something I have to earn but something You have already given me. Forgive me for building my sense of worth on things that can be taken away, and for striving to prove what You have already settled. Help me believe that I am chosen, loved, and called Your child, not because of anything I have done but because of who You are. Quiet the insecurity in me with the truth of who I am in You. Let me live today from that foundation, secure in Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
