Day 12 | Establish A Daily Routine

Devotional Written By: Neophytemuziq

I LOVE the game of basketball. I played in high school, some in college, and in leagues, 3-on-3 tournaments, summer leagues—you name it, I played it! Not only is it a great game to play and watch, but it is also a great teacher of things that are important in life, especially as believers.

Basketball teaches us how to work with others, how to be accountable, and how to sacrifice personal success for the success of the team. But in order to be a good player, you have to master the fundamental skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting. When you master these three things, you have a greater chance of achieving not only individual success but team success as well.

In order to master these skills, you must practice. Not only practice, but practice the correct way to pass, dribble, and shoot so that no matter what your defender tries to do to keep you from executing, your “muscle memory” will kick in because of the reps you’ve put into your craft. When that happens, you’ll be equipped to handle any situation.

The same can be said in our walk with God. By having a daily routine rooted in Him, consisting of prayer, reading His Word, and applying His Word, you will have the foundation to handle any situation. The Bible teaches us in 1 Timothy 4:8 that “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

A great example of this is Daniel. He was an administrator in King Darius’s kingdom. He “so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom” (Daniel 6:3).

Because of this, the other administrators tried to discredit him in the eyes of King Darius. They plotted a scheme to have Daniel thrown in prison. They decided to use his daily practice of prayer (Daniel 6:10) against him by saying, “The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.”

So King Darius did just that and threw Daniel into the lions’ den. But something totally unexpected happened. Though Daniel was not expected to survive the night, he did—and even used the very lions that were supposed to devour him as a pillow! (Daniel 6:22).

So the next time you want to “skip a day,” pray this prayer:

Father, today is not a good day.
To be honest, I want to give up.
But You’ve been too good
And You’ve been too faithful.
Help me with my procrastination
And grace me with the Spirit of consistency
Like You graced Daniel.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:

Think about a recent situation where you felt pressure, stress, or frustration. How did you respond in that moment, and what does that reveal about the spiritual habits you’ve been building?

When was the last time you were tempted to skip your time with God because you were busy, tired, or distracted? How might choosing consistency in that moment have changed the way you handled your day?
