Day 11 | Forgiving Others the Way God Forgives You

Scriptures:

Colossians 3:13: “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Matthew 6:14-15: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

As a mental health therapist, I see how often unforgiveness comes up in sessions. At some point, we all carry offenses that turn into bitterness. Forgiveness is the unexpected grace we need for healing. After being hurt, we eventually realize that letting go is essential for our freedom.

Recently, I asked my husband if there was anyone he needed to forgive. After a long pause, he said, “That’s a good question. I’ve suppressed some things, so it would take time to think about it—but I’m sure there is.” Then he asked why I was bringing it up.

My question came while writing this devotional, but I genuinely wanted him to experience the healing and restoration that comes through forgiveness. I want the same for you—and so does God.

Forgiveness is one of the first steps in building a relationship with God. Not because He needs our forgiveness, but because we desperately need His. God desires to cultivate an intimate relationship with us, and that relationship thrives in an atmosphere of forgiveness. Matthew 6:15 shocked me: if we refuse to forgive others, God will not forgive us.

God is not being harsh or punitive. He simply cannot act against His own nature. As He impressed on my heart: “It is impossible for Me to operate fully in My mercy and grace when your heart is hardened toward others.”

So, who do you need to forgive? Who needs your forgiveness? Take time right now to write down the names that come to mind. Have you also asked God to forgive you for your own sins? If not, do so now.

Unforgiveness is a heavy burden. Remember: forgiveness and reconciliation are not always the same. Forgiveness is a heart posture that sets you free. Sometimes we also need to forgive ourselves for harsh self-talk, self-hatred, and mistakes. Add those to your list too.

If you struggle to forgive someone, ask the Lord for help. I once had someone I couldn’t forgive on my own, but with God’s help, I was able to release them. After making your list, pray over it and meditate on the Scriptures above.

Watch how God moves in your life once you forgive. You will feel lighter, freer, and closer to Him. (My husband has since identified people he needed to forgive and is actively working through it to strengthen his walk with the Lord.)

Reflection Questions

  1. Who do you need to forgive, and how is unforgiveness affecting your relationship with God?
  2. What would it look like for you to forgive as the Lord has forgiven you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for forgiving me through Christ when I didn’t deserve it. Search my heart and reveal anyone I need to forgive. Give me the grace and strength to release every offense. Heal me from bitterness and restore my relationship with You. Help me walk in the freedom that comes through forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
