Proverbs 29:11
"A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards."
Breaking It Down: Hebrew Words
Let’s dig deeper into the original language to uncover the wisdom in this verse:
- "Fool" (כְּסִיל, kesil): A person who acts carelessly, without thought, and makes poor choices.
- "Uttereth" (יָבִיעַ, yabia): To pour out, like water spilling everywhere, uncontrollably.
- "All his mind" (כָּל־רוּחוֹ, kol-ruach): Literally, "all his spirit"—it’s like dumping every thought and emotion out in a rush.
- "Wise man" (חָכָם, chakam): A person who is thoughtful, calm, and makes smart decisions.
- "Keepeth it in" (יַשְׁבִּיחֶנָּה, yashbichenah): To hold back, control, and calm things down.
- "Till afterwards" (le'achar, לְאַחַר): Waiting for the right time.
Explaining It to Gen Z .
This verse is saying:
- Someone who’s foolish talks a lot without thinking. It’s like pouring out all your soda at once and making a mess!
- But a wise person knows how to stop, breathe, and think. They know when to speak and when to stay quiet, like holding onto your soda until you're ready to drink it carefully.
