Featuring Ron Smith, “The Streets Cry Jesus” is a raw, cinematic Christian Hip-Hop testimony confronting childhood trauma, fatherlessness, depression, rejection, gun violence, poverty, and the search for hope. Drawing from Craig Watson’s personal experiences and the pain he has witnessed in urban communities, the record refuses to romanticize life in the streets. Instead, it declares that no person, family, or neighborhood is beyond the reach of God’s love and redemption.
The song begins with Watson reflecting on growing up without a father figure while depression and anxiety became his “babysitters.” He recalls being bullied, moving through hotels, and longing for acceptance and stability. As the record progresses, its focus expands from one child’s wounds to entire neighborhoods where young people search for opportunities but too often encounter violence, grief, and “closed caskets.”
Rather than blaming God for the world’s brokenness, Watson addresses human free will and personal responsibility while presenting Jesus as the light capable of leading people out of darkness. The song’s defining line—“Money gentrify the hood, but Jesus gentrify the heart”—captures its central conviction: financial investment may alter a neighborhood’s appearance, but lasting transformation must also reach the human heart.
Rooted in realities experienced in Philadelphia and echoed throughout cities across America, “The Streets Cry Jesus” creates space for conversations about mental health, fatherlessness, youth violence, homelessness, addiction, forgiveness, and restoration. Its message reaches young people, families, churches, educators, counselors, community leaders, and outreach organizations working in places where trauma can become generational.
Ultimately, “The Streets Cry Jesus” is both a personal testimony and a community prayer. It acknowledges the pain coming from the streets while reminding listeners that those same streets can cry out for hope, purpose, unity, and Jesus.
Lyrics:
[Chorus: Ron Smith]
The streets cry Jesus
Aye, yo
It’s blood on the streets
Got mud on they feet
Cause the streets cry Jesus, yeah
That’s why I cry when I praise, Lord
Give em some relief
The streets cry Jesus(The streets cry Jesus)
It’s blood on the streets
Got mud on they feet
Cause the streets cry Jesus, yeah(The streets cry Jesus)
That’s why I cry when I praise, Lord
Give em some relief
The streets cry Jesus
[Verse 1: Craig Watson]
Growing up I had no father figure
Depression and anxiety they was my babysitters
They fed me pain and poison and it made my body shiver
I used to dread the thought that it was bout to be September
Cause I remember being picked on even inside of daycare
I was seeking acceptance and hoping that really they care
I need a greater place where I’m living
I can’t keep up with all these hotel visits
[Chorus: Ron Smith]
The streets cry Jesus(The streets cry Jesus)
It’s blood on the streets
Got mud on they feet
Cause the streets cry Jesus, yeah(The streets cry Jesus)
That’s why I cry when I praise, Lord
Give em some relief
The streets cry Jesus(The streets cry Jesus)
It’s blood on the streets
Got mud on they feet
Cause the streets cry Jesus, yeah(The streets cry Jesus)
That’s why I cry when I praise, Lord
Give em some relief
The streets cry Jesus(The streets cry Jesus)
The streets cry Jesus
[Verse 2: Craig Watson]
Streets so havoc
People looking for some open opportunities instead they finding closed caskets
Lotta teens on the block and they dying young
Why that kid 18 and ain’t make It to 21
Father God people saying you reason they killed
But that’s a lie because we ones with free will
I know that you a light and you take us right out the dark
Money gentrify the hood but Jesus gentrify the heart
Jesus died for everybody, those in homosexuality
Homeless people finding you goin’ make ‘em riches lotteries
Lord Jesus people looking for the truth
But they can’t find it without looking up to You
The streets cry Jesus
[Chorus: Ron Smith]
The streets cry Jesus
It’s blood on the streets
Got mud on they feet
Cause the streets cry Jesus, yeah(The streets cry Jesus)
That’s why I cry when I praise, Lord
Give em some relief
The streets cry Jesus(The streets cry Jesus)
It’s blood on the streets
Got mud on they feet
Cause the streets cry Jesus, yeah(The streets cry Jesus)
That’s why I cry when I praise, Lord
Give em some relief
The streets cry Jesus
