Christian hip-hop artist Hulvey was forced to cancel his sold-out concert in Amsterdam just an hour before taking the stage after discovering that the venue featured explicit objects and “extremely graphic” pornographic images on its walls.
Addressing fans outside in the rain and through a detailed update online, Hulvey explained that high ticket sales prompted a venue change. According to the artist, his team was moved to a different room without being informed about the explicit artwork displayed inside.
“We walked in the venue today and there were pornographic images in that venue,” Hulvey shared. “When we first booked the show, they had us booked in a different venue, but we sold too many tickets. They moved us in another room without telling us, into a room with pornographic images.”
With a VIP meet-and-greet underway and many young fans and families outside, the rapper drew a firm line. When management was asked to cover the graphic artwork, the venue reportedly refused to cover the walls, offering only to shield a side of the bar.
“And I have kids and I respect God’s creation way too much to make people walk in there and have to see sexual images on a wall. I am not okay with people seeing what were on those walls and the type of things that they could be exposed to at a Hulvey concert would not be okay to me.”
Placing his convictions first, Hulvey made the difficult choice to pull the plug.
“I stand for Jesus only, yes amen. And if that cost me a show, who cares? Who cares? Cuz I answer to Him. And so I am so sorry to you guys on behalf of, under my name…but I will not let any of you guys have to go in there and see that.”
Despite the setback, Hulvey expressed deep appreciation for the support and understanding of his fans. He and his team immediately began working to reschedule the event. An outpouring of alternative offers came from local churches and venues.
“God took a canceled show and ended up making it way more than I could have imagined,” Hulvey reflected. “I hope that this can just be an encouragement that our decisions go way further than what we think. And so God can use that little seed and make it something beautiful.”
In closing, when addressing his fans waiting for the show to start, he led them in prayer.
“So Father, I thank You for every person who came here tonight. And I pray that they would just see their brother here having to do something hard. Remind them if you’re calling them to do anything hard, they do it. I thank You God for purity. I thank You for your forgiveness. Lord, you would never, ever, ever willfully lead us into any type of temptation.”
