Sho Baraka came through to Bless The Mic with his song “Might Not Go.” It was filmed in Atlanta, GA, in collaboration with @Rapzilla. Will Thomas handled the shooting, and it was sponsored by Faith Over Fear faithoverfear.com. He also answered a few interview questions for us.
Watch Sho Baraka Perform “Might Not Go”:
Who is Sho Baraka?
I love this question because I ask people who they are. I am, well, I would like to think, someone who is for God and for humanity creatively. I’m a husband, I am a father, and I like to call myself a polymath, somebody who does many things and tries to do them well.
Tell me about the verses you performed on Bless the Mic.
So I did a track from my album, Midnight of Good Culture, called “Good Morning” (full title is “Good Morning @ 4:25 a.m. ft. Vanessa Hill.”). The reason why I did it is, I think that is probably one of the songs that I guess best represents me as an artist because I think there’s enough creativity, enough bars, metaphors, but yet still the substance of the track is talking about things that I think will get people to think and to wrestle with some truths, some philosophies, theologies that maybe a lot of songs don’t give you. I love that song, and it actually starts the album off. I think it kind of gives people an expectation of what they are going to get throughout the rest of the album.
How do you approach rapping in this setting of a live mic and cameras?
You got to know your music, and you got to be confident in your music. So if you’re confident in your music, I think so. Let me say this. The reason why I think a lot of artists from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and maybe even 80s were such good musicians, singers, performers is because they couldn’t trust in technology in a way in which we trust in technology. And I think that’s kind of seeped into rap in a lot of ways. To where the vocal kind of contortion, the double time that people rap in – if you can’t sustain it on stage live, then you probably shouldn’t do it on the album. And so that’s the first step. Is this something that you can actually do live? Second is, do you know the music? Are you confident in the music? And I feel like I am. And then it’s like, what can I do to give people something visually entertaining versus just looking at a camera and rapping? So I try to incorporate all of that and give a little character and a little theatrics where I can.
What is one of your favorite freestyles or live performances that you’ve ever heard?
Oh, there’s so many. Snarky Puppy comes to mind. Snarky Puppy is a jazz fusion band, and there are no lyrics. You would think a concert with no lyrics where it’s just instrumentation would be boring, but the way they had the crowd going from start to finish was mind-blowing.
It taught me a lot that sometimes we depend on the word or crowd control through vocal commands way too much, and that music can do that in ways that we don’t give it a chance to. So that’s one. The other thing is Anderson.Paak does a wonderful show, who plays multiple instruments. He’s just so engaging. He’s so electric on stage. He has other people on stage who help him out. Those would be the two that I remember within the last couple of years that I’ve seen that are phenomenal.
What’s the biggest thing you’re going to accomplish in 2026?
Well, it sounds kind of cheap, but I think it’s just remaining faithful in my covenant to the Lord, my wife, and my family. And sometimes that’s not as easy as it sounds. So that will be my biggest accomplishment.
