How the Best New Managers Regulate Themselves Under Pressure

You got the title. You got the office. You got the increase in comp. What nobody sat you down and taught you was how to handle the pressure that came with all of it.

The full inbox. The back-to-back meetings. The peer who’s suddenly your report. The team member you don’t yet know how to give feedback to. The boss who wants an answer yesterday.

Most newly promoted managers assume they’ll figure it out under fire. And most of them end up wound up, reactive, and exhausted by the end of the first quarter.

In this episode of The Leader I Needed, host James Rosseau Sr. sits down with Daniel Zavrel, who has spent 30 years teaching athletes, police officers, and executives how to regulate themselves under real pressure. Daniel isn’t a mindset guru. He’s a scientist, and his approach is rooted in the physiology of the nervous system, not motivational language.

Daniel walks through what actually happens inside the body when a leader is under stress, why the best-performing leaders are not the ones with the least tension but the ones who know how to find a specific zone most new managers have never even heard of, and why so much of what leaders are told about “managing stress” misses the point entirely.

He also shares his own story of being an insecure high achiever, the specific practice he uses with elite performers to reset before high-pressure moments, and a two-minute technique any new manager can start using today at their desk, in the parking lot, or right before opening a difficult email.
