The roots of the group date back to 1985 in California, when founding member David Portillo (known by his moniker Rapps Galore) teamed up with Eddie Sierra. The duo initially began performing under the name Deity. Heavily influenced by secular hip-hop legends like Kool Moe Dee, Whodini, and the Fat Boys, as well as distinct elements of soul and heavy metal, they eventually re-branded themselves as the 12th Tribe.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name 12th Tribe was rooted in Old Testament scripture. In biblical history, the twelfth tribe of Israel represents the Tribe of Benjamin. In the original Hebrew, Benjamin translates to “Son of my right hand.”

Furthermore, scripture defines the men of this tribe as Mighty Archers, elite warriors capable of fighting fiercely with bows and arrows. The group adopted this identity to frame their modern-day battles. Rather than focusing on physical warfare, they view their music and ministry as navigation tools through daily life struggles and spiritual warfare, taking the name appointed to them with deep reverence and a sense of distinguished courage.

Music and Sonic Style

Unlike many of their early-90s contemporary Christian rap peers who leaned heavily into clean pop-rap or safe dance tracks, 12th Tribe was recognized for maintaining a tougher image and a comparatively hard street rap sound.

Beyond the studio, the members of 12th Tribe have consistently prioritized direct ministry. They have frequently spoken and preached at youth conferences, using their personal testimonies to reach at-risk youth.

As veterans of the genre, they have also played an important role in preserving its history. In November 2005, the group participated as key panelists at Flavor Fest in Tampa, Florida, one of the largest Christian hip-hop conferences in the United States.
